Singapore and the Netherlands. Two Countries. One Challenge.
How to Sustain Coastal Living: Building With Nature or Against it?

The 2011 Edition of the Singapore-Netherlands Water Challenge is now closed. The next edition will be launched at the Singapore International Water Week 2012. Register your profile at www.bluespring.nl to make sure you receive the latest information!

Building on their global leadership in coastal and urban water management, Singapore and the Netherlands are joining forces in an innovation competition, the Singapore-Netherlands Water Challenge, which seeks to inspire young talent to make their personal contribution to sustainable coastal development and urban water solutions.

Launched on the 6th of July by His Excellency Johannes W.G. Jansing, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Singapore (report), the Singapore-Netherlands Water Challenge brings together a rich and diverse group of internationally recognised experts from academia, government and industry:

- Royal Boskalis Westminster
- PUB Singapore
- National University of Singapore
- Deltares
- Royal Haskoning
- Singapore-Delft Water Alliance
In addition, a number of companies and organisations are providing sponsorship for the Award, including Fugro, Hydronav, YJP Surveyors, Surbana and DutchCham Singapore. You will find a detailed profile of each of these organisations on the BlueSpring platform.

How does the Challenge work?
The competition is based on individual case-studies that describe a specific "challenge" related to coastal and urban water management. Your assignment is to write a proposal for one or more of these cases (check here for a description of the cases). Each case is run by a professional expert from the Programme Partners, These experts will be actively involved throughout the competition to help you with your assignment. Through the BlueSpring community site, they are available to answer questions, make suggestions and provide input. You may also exchange ideas with other international students who are participating.

Based on your proposal and the contributions you made to the interactions, winners are chosen for each case, who are invited to the Grand Final in Singapore.

Planning
1. Campus promotions: September-October 2011 (check here for the campus promotion schedule)
2. Deadline registrations: 20 October 2011
3. Deadline proposals: 15 January 2012
4. Grand Final in Singapore: March 2012 (date to be announced)

Who can participate?
Participation is open to Masters and PhD students and young researchers from all nationalities in all fields related to coastal development and urban water management. You may participate either individually or as a team. If you join as a team, only one team member will represent the team for the Grand Final (if selected). The awards for team and individual submissions are the same. Students at the TU Delft may be eligible to earn study points by participating ("project" or "additional thesis").

Do I need to pay to participate?
No, participation is free. Also, when you are invited for the semi-final presentations or the Grand Final, we will cover all your travel and accommodation expenses.

What is the award I can win?
The overall winner of the Challenge will be awarded with the Singapore-Netherlands Sustainability Award, a prestigious national award which consists of an exclusive internship or research project with the Singapore-Delft Water Alliance centre of excellence. You will work closely with the Programme Partners to further develop your plans and ideas! In addition, individual case winners will be awarded by the Programme Partners.

Needless to say, your participation in and of itself provides a perfect opportunity to meet with top-class organisations and discuss your career interests - whether it is to pursue further research after your graduation or to work with an international company!

The Winners in 2010

Winners of the Holland Water Challenge 2010 are being congratulated by the Dutch Environmental Minister, Mrs. Huizinga, during a grand dinner in Shanghai with senior representatives from Chinese and Dutch industry, government and universities.

After an intensive competition, in which students competed for 6 months, it was student Li Xiang from Tongji University who was awarded the first prize. He was offered an internship in the Netherlands to further develop his ideas for an integrated system that uses wind energy and solar heating to provide residents of high-rise apartment buildings in China with clean drinking water.
