Launch & Media Reports

The Sinapore-edition of the Holland Water Challenge ("Singapore-Netherlands Water Challenge") was officially announced on the 6th of July by His Excellency Johannes W.G. Jansing, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Singapore. The announcement was made by the Ambassador at a Network Lunch during the Singapore International Water Week, attended by more than 100 representatives from the water sectors in the Netherlands and Singapore.

“Where innovation and knowledge meet water technology, a world of possibility awaits. Both Singapore and the Netherlands are proven leaders in the quest for sustainable economic growth and maximization of human resources, leveraging the promising global water sector. As we continue to explore these vital subjects, there are innumerable opportunities for bilateral cooperation-- not only between our two countries, but also between businesses, governments, individuals, and knowledge institutions, on an international scale. Bright, enquiring young minds are invited to accept this challenge to help unlock water's vast potential.”

The launch of the Singapore-Netherlands Water Challenge was again addressed by the President of the National University of Singapore, Prof. Tan Chorh Chuan, during his presentation on the occasion of the opening of the Aquatic Science Center in the afternoon of the 6th of July. Prof. Tan emphasized the importance of the ties between Singapore and the Netherlands.

In a separate statement, Mr. Khoo Teng Chy, Chief Executive of PUB - Singapore's national water agency - also recommended the initiative:

"It is my fervent hope that the Singapore-Netherlands Water Challenge will bring to the forefront the finest examples of innovation in water management and showcase the best ideas generated by young talent from around the world. The challenge will go a long way in providing comprehensive shape to the vision of sustainable management of one of the most precious of natural resources - water.”

The Winners in 2010

Winners of the Holland Water Challenge 2010 are being congratulated by the Dutch Environmental Minister, Mrs. Huizinga, during a grand dinner in Shanghai with senior representatives from Chinese and Dutch industry, government and universities.

After an intensive competition, in which students competed for 6 months, it was student Li Xiang from Tongji University who was awarded the first prize. He was offered an internship in the Netherlands to further develop his ideas for an integrated system that uses wind energy and solar heating to provide residents of high-rise apartment buildings in China with clean drinking water.
